Run your own racebefore chasing the finish line

Designing a running app that empowers every runner through motivating experiences, intuitive tracking, and goal-driven design.

Problem Statement

Many runners struggle to stay consistent and motivated in tracking their daily runs. Existing running apps often feel cluttered, data-heavy, or lack emotional engagement, making users lose interest over time. There’s a need for a running companion that not only tracks performance accurately but also inspires consistency through a simple, motivating, and emotionally engaging experience.

Our challenge was to design an interface that feels dynamic, motivating, and focused capturing the spirit of running while maintaining clarity, usability, and consistency for both casual joggers and dedicated runners.

User Research

As this project was developed as part of a university assignment, the user research was conducted through simple analysis and observation rather than large-scale field testing. The insights were gathered by analyzing common behaviors and challenges faced by runners based on online feedback, app reviews, and informal discussions with a few active joggers. The findings revealed that runners value ease of use, motivating visuals, and clear progress tracking. They also prefer applications that feel lightweight yet engaging, allowing them to focus on the joy of running without distractions. These simplified insights helped define the foundation for Roamers’ user-centered design direction.

Users wanted an app that felt like a motivating running companion rather than a technical tracker, offering encouragement, simplicity, and a sense of achievement with every run.

Design Solution

The design focuses on creating a seamless and motivating jogging experience through a clean interface and intuitive interactions.

Results

Since this project was completed as a conceptual design, no real-world launch or user data was collected. However, through design evaluation and peer feedback during the development process, the concept successfully demonstrated how a clean interface, motivational visuals, and simplified user flow can create a more engaging running experience. The final prototype effectively communicates the brand’s energy, clarity, and purpose showing strong potential to be developed into a functional, user-focused jogging app in the future.

Key Takeaways

This project highlighted the importance of designing with empathy and understanding users’ motivations, even through simple research methods. The process reinforced that simplicity and clarity are key to building trust, while motivational visuals and progress tracking can enhance emotional engagement and consistency. Balancing aesthetics with usability ensured the app felt both inspiring and practical, supporting users’ focus during their runs. Although the project remained a conceptual design, peer feedback and design testing proved essential in validating ideas and refining the overall user experience before potential real-world development.
